DESCRIPTION

The Ingham Conservation District is seeking Invasive Species Seasonal Crew Members for the Mid-Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) 2021 Strike Team. The Crew will consist of a Field Lead and Crew Member tasked with conducting survey and management activities across the Mid-Michigan CISMA service area of Ingham, Clinton, Eaton and Ionia Counties under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator. The Field Lead position is a 32 hour per week position from May – September and the Crew Member position is a 20 hour per week position from May - July.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Perform invasive species field survey and management activities including application of herbicides using various techniques including cut-stump, injection and foliar spray, and by mechanical means including hand-pulling, brush cutting and other means of removal
  • Record field data using Google Sheets, GPS units and the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN)
  • Communicate invasive species and treatment information to the public during site visits
  • Participate in Invasive Species surveys and report sightings to the MISIN

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursuing a degree in natural resources or a related field, or high school diploma and at least one season of relevant field work experience
  • Must pass exams for Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories of Right-of-Way, Ornamentals and Aquatics within first month of employment (if not currently certified). Study materials and exam costs will be provided.
  • Able to carry a 25lb backpack sprayer across uneven terrain
  • Able to operate a kayak and work in waders
  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain (terrestrial and aquatic environments) and environmental conditions
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google applications
  • Valid MI Driver’s license and reliable vehicle (the CISMA will provide a vehicle for field site visits)
  • Strong work ethic
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Flexibility - expect at least 2 days a week to work 10-hr field days and to occasionally adapt schedules based on weather conditions

 

DESIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Current Commercial Pesticide Applicator License
  • Previous experience identifying, managing and treating invasive species
  • Familiarity with invasive species found in mid-Michigan and the surrounding region

 

COMPENSATION

Field Lead: hourly rate of $15.00 - $17.00/hour

Crew Member: hourly rate of $13.00 - $15.00/hour

Rates commensurate with experience
